Wifi that breaks the speed barrier

The strength of your WiFi signal reflected in the little icon on your Mac, iPhone or other device is NOT a reflection of your speed. In fact, most people never know they’re realizing a very small fraction of the speed they are paying for every month. Why? Because no one performed channel planning on their network.

Channel planning is the process of making sure that the WiFi signal is optimized for your environment, taking into consideration homes, offices, cars and more located within thousands of feet of your house, the wireless noise they create.

Repeaters promise to make things better, but it’s consumer snake oil. Repeaters automatically reduce the amount of available internet speed by 65-75% automatically for every hop. That means if you have 2 repeaters in your home, and if you’re paying for 500Mbps download speeds, in reality you’re getting at BEST 25% of 25% of 500Mbps. Which is 31Mbps. You’re paying for cable or fiber, but you’re getting 1990s level DSL. And your upload is even worse, which is why no one can see you clearly on your Zoom calls.

Why does this happen? There are two major reasons: 1) Manufacturers of WiFi equipment don’t focus on educating consumers, they educate only IT managers who buy their products. And 2) AV companies often install WiFi in order to make their AV systems work, but without knowledge of how to channel plan, design and tune WiFi for optimal performance and security. Based on 30 years of experience, I can tell you it’s always a mess when the AV vendor installs the WiFi.
